DEVON’S LATEST TREE TOP SURF ADVENTURE

Friday, July 3rd, 2009 - 12:30

Devon’s latest tree top adventure opened its doors to the public today (Friday 19th June 2009). The new high ropes activity course near Tavistock attracted outdoor enthusiasts, adventure seekers and local tourism providers from Devon and Cornwall to the official opening day.

To celebrate the opening, one of the UK’s few tree surfers and recreational tree climbers, Paul Poynter, demonstrated the extreme sport of ‘Tree Surfing’. Where only the bravest walk out onto the thinnest branch that will take your weight and surf the branch as it’s carried in the wind.

Tree Surfers is the latest adrenaline fuelled adventure attraction in the South West. It has three high rope activity courses with a complex of ladders, rope bridges, zip wires, trapeze swings and surfing planks that transports you through the tree canopy of the beautiful Tamar Valley.

Councillor Neil Burden and Councillor Robin Pike officially opened Tree Surfers and ten lucky prize draw winners were the first out on the course. Visitors were treated to an array of demonstrations and had the opportunity to try out the course for themselves.

Paul Turner of Tree Surfers, said: “After two and half years in the planning and several months building the Ropes Course we are really pleased to see the first people enjoying the course and celebrate with local tourism providers who have supported us. We hope to have the other elements of Tree Surfers ready for the summer, which includes a Tree Jump and Canopy Zip Tour and look forward to sharing an eco-educational and adrenaline thumping outdoor experience in the heart of the Tamar Valley with local visitors and educational groups.”

Tree Surfers will also hold a public open day on Saturday 20th June from 10.00am until 1.00pm where members of the public will have the opportunity to see Paul Poynter in action tree surfing and take part in prize draws and taster sessions on the Ropes Course.

Course layout completed

Monday, April 6th, 2009 - 10:42

The final course layout has been decided. The course builders have designed the definitive route for the 45 element ropes course. This process had to include the position of the trees, the health of the trees and the distance the trees were apart. Unlike most tree courses which are based in conifer plantations where the trees have been planted in rows our broadleaved woodland is somewhat random and it has taken a lot of thought and planningto decide the route.
